If You Build It, They Will Come ~ Freshmen Interest Abounds for Lakers in 2007

The increased and continually expanding infrastructure of the Boys’ Latin Golf Program has proven itself to be a magnet of sorts for young faces and fresh energy. 2007 is shaping up to be a season of new talent for the Laker Team – a team which in the previous three seasons had leaned on juniors and seniors for the most significant component of its membership composition.

These “Young Guns” are led by the talents of such notable individuals as A.J. Billig, Sammy Dunbar, Ben Whitman, Matt Sherman and Drew Kaiser. All of these incoming Laker freshmen maintain the ability to break-out as future stars on the Golf Team. Each boasts a heightened talent level as well as a sustainable focus and disciplined work ethic – all attributes that will serve them well in the future both on and off the golf course. The coaching staff has been impressed and inspired by their passion for development and desire to succeed.

These players join an already-young Laker Golf Team that finds two highly-talented sophomores returning for their second season on the squad (Kevin Foreman and Gates Blair) as well as a junior slated for his third season with the team (Patrick Hohman). In fact, only one senior is currently postured to find his way back to the varsity squad this season (Ian Obligin). Indeed, when the 2007 season arrives it will find the Lakers with a full line-up and heightened talent pool – two attributes that will help form a team well-positioned for success in the time ahead.

The players have been intrigued by the Golf Program’s methods of game improvement, environment of peer camaraderie, opportunities for individual impact, unique travel and rewards opportunities, and authentic interaction with coaches and team members. They believe that the Golf Program will provide them with an arena of personal growth as well as a structure for group achievement. They see a sustainable growth rate for continued advancement in the time ahead – and a unique platform for continued victory for themselves and their teammates.

The Team’s potential for future progression has been lifted and the focus of the coaches for ongoing development has been boosted. The future is bright for the Lakers; and 2007 is full of promise.

Par Four Proves No Match for Laker Freshman

Incoming Laker Freshman, Ben Whitman secured the unprecedented achievement of a hole-in-one this summer on the links of The Ausable Club in St. Huberts, New York.

What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that the ace occurred on the two hundred fifty yard par four first hole!

Ben’s aggressive course management was rewarded after his drive sailed to the front of the green, continued to release toward the flagstick, and disappeared into the cup on July 7th, 2006.

Congratulations Ben! May the same good fortune follow you on the course during the 2007 Laker Golf Season.
